Hosting Giveaways can benefit your blog in many ways. First it drives tons of traffic to your blog. If you have ads or affiliate links this will increase your income during the giveaway. You can have the entry requirements include following your social media or news letter accounts. This can drastically improve your following as well as subsequent traffic.
I love hosting giveaways whether for myself or for a brand HOWEVER I have spent a lot of money promoting my giveaways with very little traffic. I have spent hours marketing my giveaways with little to on pay off. I consider those failures an education though because now I know exactly how to promote a giveaway to get maximum entries for your time and money.
How to host a successful giveaway
Self Hosted or Brand Sponsored: A self-hosted giveaway is where you provide the prize and your only goal is to promote yourself and increase you following. I love doing this because I have total control over the whole process and I can have fun giving away something I know my readers will enjoy.
Brand-sponsored giveaways are fun too but your main focus should be promoting the brand or product. I always focus on getting them followers and spreading the word about their company over promoting myself. Of course you can have a couple of entry requirements that include following you but the focus should be on the company. These are nice because you only have to choose a winner and the company handles getting their prize to them.
Prize: The first thing to do is think of a prize. First of all, is your prize something that will appeal to your target audience? My most successful giveaway each year is my $100 Toys R Us giveaway which I host right before Christmas. Since my target audience is parents, I lose almost no followers after the giveaway is over.
If you host a giveaway of a $100 cash for you photography blog, A LOT of people will sign up and follow you to try to win the prize. A LOT will also drop off as soon as the give away is over. A camera would be a better prize for that type of blog.
Marketing: Marketing your giveaway is so important. There are so many places where you can advertise for free and so many where you can pay to advertise. I personally always advertise on Online-Sweepstakes and Sweepstakes Advantage. I also purchase the pay-per-click advertising from Sweepstakes Advantage. It is hands down the best way to advertise your giveaway.
