Dark Hope by Monica McGurk is a book about a young girl named Hope who was kidnapped as small child and then found with a strange tattoo on her neck. The book starts out with Hope moving in with her mother to get away from her over protective father whose sole purpose in life is to guard her. Not only does he blame himself for his kidnapping but he also feels that she was not a random target and there are more dangers awaiting her if he lets her out of his sight. At first we think he may be crazy but as we read further, we begin to realize that Hope’s father couldn’t be more right.
The book is filled with mysteries and unanswered questions that slowly reveal themselves as the book goes on. The author lets the secrets unfold tantalizingly, revealing the answer to some questions at the same time that she adds a twist that only increase the mystery. Every time she gives clarity, she also draws you deeper into the mystery.
I love mystery books and can usually guess how things will play out but Monica McGurk weaved such a tale that I stopped guessing about halfway through the read and just let her tell Hope’s story. It’s not often that I get to mindlessly go on a journey with a fictional character but this time I did and I throughly enjoyed myself.
There are many aspects to the book that are obviously completely fictional but the book is so well-written that you find yourself believing that they could be true. You begin to compare mythical relationships to relationships in your own life and can understand the feelings and motivations behind each character. I felt myself melting along with the love story, breathing heavy during the chase scenes, and holding my breath during tense moments. To me, that is the mark of a great book.
