Blogging Tips and Resources
Here are some blogging tips and resources that I’ve learned about along the way. These are all of the things I wish I knew when I was starting out years ago. I wasted so much time and money on products and ideas that didn’t benefit me at all yet it was all a great education because now I know what works and what doesn’t, what’s worth spending money on and what’s not. Below is a compilation of all the tips and resources I’d share with a friend who was starting a blog.
Before you get started you need to get a professional logo. A professional logo is an important investment that will make you seem well-established no matter how new you are. The Logo Company is my recommendation if you’re looking for a professional logo that you can use for years to come. They are not only the best but inexpensive compared to their competitors. They could easily be charging 3 times their price for logo design.
Blogging Tip #1: Starting Your Blog
So many people ask me how to start a blog. There are the steps, in order, of how to start a blog. This is a quick run down but I also have a detailed How To Set Up A Blog post with step-by step instructions and screen shots. Here are the tools I use in order of how to set up an awesome blog:
Step 1 – Bluehost – Bluehost is the site I use to host my site and I wish I started out here instead of having to move my blog. It was a huge hassle and I lost a lot of followers and spent months rebuilding. The Bluehost/Wordpress.org combo is really what you want if you’re planning on making money from your blog.
Step 2 – WordPress.org – Once you sign up for Bluehost you can easily sign up for wordpress.org through the control panel.
Step 3 – Genesis Framework – Genesis theme is to be used on WordPress blogs. Once you’ve signed up for Bluehost and WordPress.org, Genesis is the next step. This is the parent theme and then you’ll find a child theme you like.
Step 4 – Associate Theme-The Associate theme is what I currently use on this site. Prior to this I used Prose which is very plain but easy to customize the colors.
Step 5 – Set up a mailing list. A mailing list is where the money’s at. If you spend money on nothing else an email marketing tool would be the thing. I personally love Aweber . Plus they have a deal where you can sign up and try it out for risk-free:
AWeber proves it to thousands of businesses every day.

Blogging Tip #2: Setting Up Social Media
Pinterest – Drives Traffic. I started on Pinterest after everyone else and I wish I jumped on the bandwagon earlier. It drives so much traffic it’s unbelievable.
Twitter – Meeting new friends and sharing information. Twitter is kind of like going to the bar alone and meeting lots of new people. You have to know how to work the room at a bar and you have to get to know how to work Twitter in order to network.
Facebook – Making closer connections with your followers. Facebook is like having friends and family over for a get-together. They already like you but this is your opportunity to connect and get to know each other better.
Blogging Tip #3: Promoting Your Blog
Hosting Giveaways-Hosting giveaways and contests are a great way to increase views and followers.
Sweepstakes Promotion Advertising is the best site to promote your giveaway. I have spent so much money on so many different sites trying out new ways to promote my giveaways but now this is the only site I spend money on. I always buy the per click advertising-trust me, it is so worth it.
Online-Sweepstakes is the other place I always advertise my giveaways.
Less Than Perfect Parents – I offer a giveaways promotion for bloggers. I tried to create a package that I would want to use and for a price I’d be willing to pay. E-mail me at tracygibb @ lessthanperfectparents.com
Pop Up Domination-I seriously LOVE Pop Up Domination. First of all, just installing it noticeabley increased my email sign ups PLUS you can purchase pop ups that include social media. That means you can build your email list and social media all with one tool. What’s not to love?
Blogging Tip #4: Increasing Traffic
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)-Search engine optimization is key for driving traffic to your blog.
Social Media-Utilizing all of your social media channels is an easy and free way to get more eyes on your blog.
Newsletter or Email List-I use Aweber to automatically send out every single blog post to my followers. I set it up when I signed up and now it’s a way to drive traffic to my site with absolutely no effort from me. If I started my blog over again today, knowing what I know now, I would focus all of my efforts on building my email list using Aweber.
